SPECwpcSM project group

The SPECwpcSM (Workstation Performance Characterization) project group is part of the SPEC Graphics and Workstation Performance Group (SPEC/GWPG). It was formed in 2012 to create a benchmark that measures the performance of workstations running algorithms used in popular applications, but without requiring the full application and associated licensing to be installed on the system under test.

Benchmark methodology

The SPECworkstation benchmark tests CPU, graphics, I/O and memory bandwidth based on real applications in the following categories: media and entertainment, financial services, product development, energy, life sciences, and general operations.

Tests within the SPECwpc benchmark are scalable, solve large problems, support multiple architectures, and are freely available to the public. The benchmark is designed to be easy to install and run, but still rigorous enough to provide meaningful, repeatable data for performance evaluation.

Structure and membership

The SPECwpc project group is a non-profit group whose general costs are paid primarily by SPEC/GWPG membership fees or dues. Any company, individual, institution or other group can become a sustaining member at any point in the development phase by remitting these dues. An appeals process has been established through which any interested or affected party may register and have heard a complaint concerning committee action or inaction. The principles of due process and antitrust compliance are adhered to by the SPECwpc project group at all times.
